I was born into a large family in Kenya, where I visited our local game reserves and snorkelled weekly, fuelling my love of the natural world and animals. I still find my center in nature and the ocean.
I withdrew internally after losing my twin brother at a very early age through a tragic accident, and I turned to animals for comfort instead of people. As a child, I was surrounded by various pets, and I frequently woke up with our numerous cats nestled against me. To this day I share my home with feline companions.
We moved from Kenya to South Africa to complete my education, which made me feel even more alone. To make matters worse, I was teased at my new school for being so different, further encouraging my attachment to animals, who never judge and accept me as I am.
As a pre-teen, a teacher motivated me to express my feelings through art, and finding a box of pastels, I created my first piece of art — a portrait of my late brother. Through his portrait, I felt like I could keep him alive forever. Since then, art has allowed me to create touchstones, connecting me to the people and creatures who inspire me the most. In examining the people and animals I paint, I recognize their individuality—their personalities and lives are reflected in their faces—and it is through this that I see the Divine's Hand at work.
To support my sister after a terminal Cancer diagnosis, I relocated to the UK, and I have lived in Royal Tunbridge Wells for the past six years. Following my own Cancer Diagnosis, PTSD, and my sister's death, painting has become my lifeline. It is especially vital during the gloomy English winters when I miss Africa the most and I find it a way to embrace my memories, Africa, and the local animals in the Woodlands close to my home.
Gratefully, through Natural healing and lots of meditation and prayer, I am Cancer-free. By showcasing the beauty of this world and those who succeed despite challenges, I hope to inspire myself, and others like me, to rediscover nature and the Divine within.
